ON THE BLOG: Diabulimia: The Intersection of Diabetes and Eating Disorders
Diabulimia is a serious and often overlooked condition that occurs when individuals with Type 1 diabetes intentionally restrict insulin as a means of weight control. This dangerous behavior can lead to severe health complications, including a significantly higher risk of death compared to Type 1 diabetes or anorexia alone. Managing diabetes requires constant focus on food, blood sugar levels, and insulin intake, which can contribute to disordered eating patterns. Factors such as body image concerns, diabetic burnout, and weight-related stigma can further increase the risk of developing diabulimia. Learn about the warning signs of diabulimia, including neglecting diabetes management, extreme anxiety about body image, restricting certain food groups, and experiencing frequent nausea, fatigue, or vision problems. Treatment for diabulimia presents unique challenges, as individuals must maintain structured eating habits for medical reasons while also working toward a balanced relationship with food. With specialized support, recovery is possible, but it requires addressing both the eating disorder and the complexities of diabetes management.
