Therapy for Trauma

At The Current, we understand that trauma can have a profound and lasting effect on your life. Whether the trauma stems from childhood, an accident, an assault, a difficult relationship, or ongoing stress, it can shape how you feel, think, and interact with the world. Trauma often leaves emotional scars that interfere with your ability to live fully and freely, impacting relationships, self-esteem, and daily functioning.

We specialize in treating trauma using primarily three different evidence based treatment modalities.

  1. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing): EMDR is a highly effective, scientifically validated therapy designed to help individuals process and heal from trauma. It uses bilateral stimulation (typically in the form of guided eye movements) to help reprocess traumatic memories and reduce the emotional charge that these memories carry. When a person experiences a traumatic event, the brain’s natural ability to process the experience may be overwhelmed, causing the trauma to become "stuck." EMDR helps the brain reprocess these memories, allowing the individual to integrate them in a healthier, more adaptive way.

  2. IFS (Internal Family Systems): IFS is a powerful therapeutic model that views the mind as made up of distinct “parts,” each with its own feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. Often, these parts are formed in response to trauma, with some parts becoming overwhelmed by negative emotions or beliefs, while others take on protective roles to keep us safe. For example, a part of you might be stuck in anger or shame from past trauma, while another part may try to avoid or numb those emotions through unhealthy coping mechanisms.

IFS helps individuals identify, understand, and heal the different parts of themselves. By engaging with these parts in a compassionate and nonjudgmental way, IFS facilitates healing, integration, and personal growth.

  3. RO-DBT (Radically Open Dialectical Behavioral Therapy): RO-DBT is a revolutionary, bottom-up approach, targeting nervous system regulation, enhancing safe, authentic connections and flexible thinking. RO-DBT focuses on present day styles of controlled coping and helps clients build skills to develop a sense of safety and cultivate safe relationships. RO-DBT values flexibility, openness and connectedness. It works to effectively reduce trauma symptoms of hypervigilance and avoidance.

The Connection Between Trauma and Eating Disorders

For many individuals, past trauma may manifest in complex ways—one of which is through eating disorders. These disorders are often a way of coping with deep emotional pain, a means to regain control, or an attempt to numb the distressing effects of past trauma. Healing from both trauma and an eating disorder requires a holistic approach, one that addresses the roots of pain and nurtures long-term recovery.

Eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder, often coexist with histories of trauma. While each individual’s experience is unique, trauma is a significant contributing factor in the development and perpetuation of these conditions. In many cases, eating disorders provide a temporary sense of control or relief, allowing individuals to manage difficult emotions and memories. However, these behaviors often grow more complex over time, leading to further distress and a cycle of unhealthy coping strategies.

Our therapists have extensive experience in treating both trauma and eating disorders, ensuring that you receive comprehensive, compassionate care. We value multi-disciplinary treatment team approach to address the complex nature of eating disorders. We can help you gain insight into the specific function of your eating disorder and how you’ve been using it to cope with past [or present] trauma. We help you develop effective and sustainable coping strategies to replace the coping functions that the eating disorder was providing. We can also help you understand the layered connection between trauma, eating disorders and body image. Our therapists have skills to help you improve body image and restore a sense of self-worth. We work with clients to develop a more accepting relationship with their bodies, focusing on reconnection with their bodies in a compassionate and non-judgmental way. Our therapists use a combination of evidence based trauma treatments and eating disorder treatments to effectively and safety treat both.
